Stephen McHattie (born February 3, 1947) is a prolific and acclaimed Canadian character actor known for his distinctively intense screen presence, gaunt features, and extensive body of work spanning over two hundred film, television, and stage credits. Born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, he trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and spent his early career building a formidable reputation in New York theater—earning critical acclaim and off-Broadway awards in productions like Ghetto and Mensch Meier. Transitioning to film and television in Los Angeles and later Canada, McHattie carved out a niche playing complex villains, authority figures, and brooding heavies in major projects such as A History of Violence, Watchmen (as the original Nite Owl), 300, Secretary, and cult horror favorites like Pontypool. He is also widely recognized for memorable television guest and recurring roles on series like Seinfeld (as Dr. Reston), The X-Files, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Orphan Black, alongside celebrated Canadian dramatic turns that earned him a Gemini Award for Life with Billy and a Genie Award for playing hockey broadcaster Dick Irvin in The Rocket.
