Several decades later, he discovers that his mother's grave is located in a small town in northern Croatia and chooses to visit it. However, upon arrival into town, he's told that the local cemetary had been submerged underwater as a result of a swamp flood, so that, if he still wishes to perform the funerary rites properly, he'll have to wait a few more months until the waters recede and the local authorities do something about the situation.
