Hua Zhao, a top-tier lawyer from the 21st century, opens her eyes in the body of a village girl in 1970s China, dealt a hand with nothing in it: no parents, a grandfather too sick to work, and a forced marriage already in progress around her. Ye Shen, a senior worker visiting on his own grandfather's behalf, wants no part of the trap her family has sprung on him. What follows is her long climb out of it, dragging half the village up with her.
